Who is the QBIC?

QBIC is the peak industry body representing bus and coach operators throughout Queensland.

QBIC is the only industry body representing the bus and coach industry on a range of strategic taskforces and committees with the Queensland Government.

QBIC represents members’ interests on the Department of Transport and Main Roads Strategic Forum,the QLD Tourism and Transport Strategy, the Bus Safety Forum and the Accessibility Forum, with the critical objective of ensuring the bus and coach industry in Queensland is profitable and sustainable in the long term.

QBIC has strong metropolitan and regional bases plus a network of QBIC Branches where members have the opportunity to meet and discuss critical issues with other operators in their areas.

QBIC’s operations are overseen by the QBIC Management Committee made up of elected representatives from all sectors of the industry.

QBIC is able to deal with sector specific issues through three sub-Committees:

  • Commercial Contracts
  • School Services
  • Long Distance, Tour and Charter

About the Bus Industry in Queensland

According to the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads Annual Report 2010-11 Queensland has over 50,651 authorised drivers of public transport, 33,347 kilometres of road network controlled by the State Government, 27 commercial based urban bus contracts, 11 long-distance bus contracts and 1260 school bus contracts.

The published budget for the Department in 2010-11 was $3.7 billion for operating and $3.6 billion for capital to deliver a safe, efficient and integrated transport system for Queensland.

In 2010-11 the number of trips taken by public transport in the TransLink Transit Authority area of operations was 178.6 million.

Throughout Australia the bus and coach industry is made up of more than 3,000 businesses which employ over 40,000 people across the country.

Nationally  the bus and coach industry carries more than 1.5 billion passengers over 20 billion passengers kilometres per annum, with an annual turnover of more than $10 billion.

According to a report released by the School Transport Safety Taskforce, school bus travel has been found to be the safest mode of travel to and from school by road.

This is in addition to findings of the Federal Office of Road Safety in 1998 which found per passenger kilometre, bus travel is the safest form of road travel in Australia.
